U-16 Japan to Challenge U-17 EURO Qualifiers
Japan Football Association (JFA) announced on 18th that U-16 Japan will participate in the "2026-27 UEFA U-17 European Championship Qualifiers Round 1 Group 13" held in Cyprus from October 27th to November 2nd, and will play international friendly matches with the U-16 teams of the three countries participating in the same group. The three countries participating in the group are the host country Cyprus, Romania, and the Faroe Islands. Japan will play three games against the three teams, each with a different opponent. By participating in the UEFA European Championship qualifiers, U-16 Japan will be able to compete against top-level European players of the same age and gain international experience. This initiative is a collaboration between UEFA and JFA to promote youth player development and international experience through inter-continental exchanges. For Japanese youth players, competing against European teams with different cultures and playing styles in a formal game environment is a valuable opportunity. Note that Japan's three games will be international friendly matches and will not be reflected in the official results or group standings of the UEFA U-17 European Championship qualifiers. The Group 13 qualifying round will only feature matches between the three teams from Cyprus, Romania, and the Faroe Islands. 2026-27 UEFA U-17 European Championship's player eligibility is for players born on or after January 1, 2010, the same age as U-16 Japan.
