Iwao Ohiwa emerges as top candidate for Japan's next manager
Iwao Ohiwa, current manager of Japan's U-21 team, has emerged as the leading candidate to become the next Japan national team manager. This was hinted at by Masakuni Yamamoto, technical director of the Japan Football Association, during a press briefing on July 23.
Why is Ohiwa considered the frontrunner?
Yamamoto emphasized the importance of continuity and growth, stating that "coordination with youth categories is essential." He also cited the success of managers like Spain's Luis de la Fuente, who progressed from youth teams to lead their nations at the World Cup.
Current manager's situation
Current manager Hajime Moriyasu's contract is expected to be extended for six months until the 2027 Asian Cup (opening January 7). Ohiwa is already being considered for a dual role, managing both the U-21 team targeting the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and the senior national team.
