Zion Suzuki has rejected a move to Manchester United to join Aston Villa. The Japan international goalkeeper is set for a Premier League transfer.
The Athletic reported on August 19 that Suzuki turned down interest from United to complete a move to Villa. Suzuki said, "I decided to transfer this time as a step up in aiming to be the best in the world."
Suzuki has represented Japan at senior level since 2022. He made his debut at age 19 and played all four games at the World Cup, where Japan lost to Brazil in the round of 32. Standing at 6ft 3in (191cm), Suzuki aims to become the first Japanese goalkeeper in the Premier League.
Why Aston Villa wanted Suzuki
Aston Villa were active in the goalkeeper market this summer, looking to replace Emi Martinez. The Argentina international had a strong campaign, finishing fourth with Villa, but suffered four late withdrawals in warm-ups last season. Villa had been in talks with Parma and were monitoring a proposed move to Paris Saint-Germain. However, Suzuki's preference was always Villa Park.
Suzuki told Goal there were no Japanese goalkeepers in the Premier League and he wanted to be the first. This transfer brings that ambition closer.
Suzuki's career so far and what's next
Suzuki joined Sint-Truiden on loan from Urawa Red Diamonds in 2023. At 20 years old, he had not played in Europe before. He made 32 appearances for Sint-Truiden, keeping six clean sheets. At the World Cup, he featured in all four matches for Japan. He has also faced racist abuse but said he wants to fight back with good results.
